A craft that dates back to the12th-13th century, the art of lacquer-ware is called Pan yun in Myanmar. A time intensive process, these exquisite art pieces made of bamboo or jackfruit wood often depict palace scenes, the signs of the Burmese Zodiac or scenes from Jataka tales. These offering bowls, or hsun ok as they are traditionally known, are used to carry food, usually to the Buddhist temple. Due to their intricate designs, they also make for beautiful decor in homes.
